A new statue that pays tribute to the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg is stirring up some controversy in New York City. The gold statue was recently placed in front of a courthouse alongside statues of other lawmakers like Moses and Confucius. Unlike the other statues, this one does not at all resemble the person it represents.
New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino took to Twitter to express her concerns about the statue.
The artist, Pakistani-American Shahzia Sikander, explained the work, saying it symbolizes a "fierce woman and a form of resistance in a space that has historically been dominated by patriarchal representation."
She said she named the statue 'NOW' because it represents the urgency to protect women's reproductive rights after the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
'With Ginsburg's death and the reversal of Roe, there was a setback to women's constitutional progress,' she wrote in a statement about the piece.
She also added that the "horns" are a symbol of the statue's "sovereignty and autonomy."
Others on Twitter commented that the statue is satanic, has no historical relevance, and emphasizes the problem with modern art.
The statue also inspired some interesting memes.
