Canadian Girl Guides Drops "Brownies" Name Deemed Racially Offensive

Girl Guides, the Canadian version of the Girl Scouts, has dropped the "Brownies" name from it's organization because it was deemed "racially offensive."

According to Girl Guides CEO Jill Zelmanovits, many current and former members expressed concern about the "Brownies" name and believed it "caused harm and was a barrier to belonging for racialized girls and women."

The new name is "Embers," which Zelmanovits said will help to bring the magic of Girl Guides to elementary age girls in a more inclusive way.
