3 Pinellas County Chickens in Sentinel Flock Positive For West Nile Virus

The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County has reported that three chickens in a sentinel flock have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Are we surprised? At this point, no.

Local health officials caution residents to protect themselves against mosquitoes to help limit exposure to the mosquito borne-disease.

Here are some tips for protection against mosquitos:

  • Drain standing water to stop mosquitos from multiplying
  • Maintain swimming pools, empty plastic swimming pools when not using
  • Cover skin with clothing or repellent
