Lightning Stuck and Killed Two Giraffes at a Florida Wildlife Park

Two giraffes, Lily and Jioni, were killed when they were struck by lightning at an animal park in Wellington, FL. The accident happened at Wild Country Safari in May, but the cause of death was just now determined.

A Facebook post from the park reads, "The keepers and our whole team were understandably devastated by this sudden and tragic loss; out of respect for their mourning and the pending pathology results, we waited to share this information."

At Lion Country Safari, animals are not caged like a zoo, but able to freely roam within enclosed areas. A park spokesperson said the animals have the ability to seek shelter during bad weather, but they do not like to force animals into spaces where they are uncomfortable.
