With most of Florida in Hurricane Dorian's path, now is the time to give your home's insurance a check-up.
Time is quickly running out if you realize your home insurance needs to be updated.
Insurance Information Institute's Lynne McChristian suggests you call your insurance agent now to review what coverage you have and what you need to do if you do need to file a claim.
It will also give you your exact deductible dollar amount.
Insurance companies typically stop writing or updating homeowners and windstorm policies once a hurricane watch or warning is issued.
Flood damage is not covered by homeowners insurance.
A separate flood insurance is necessary, it takes 30 days for flood insurance to go into effect, so any damage caused by this storm wouldn't be covered by a newly purchased policy.
McChristian recommends using this calm before the storm to take photos of your home's contents to serve as an inventory in case you have to file a claim.
