The House Ways and Means Committee is considering letting tax breaks for the richest Americans expire, which would return their top income tax rate to 39.6% from the current 37%. This change could impact approximately 1.5 million households and cut about $409 billion of the cost, according to the Tax Foundation, a right-leaning think tank. Another option is to create a new tax bracket for the wealthy, potentially raising $59.3 billion over a decade.

Despite these discussions, Trump's proposal remains uncertain, as it faces significant opposition within his party. The administration continues to seek ways to balance tax cuts with spending reductions to prevent increasing the national debt.
