The Detroit Tigers (49-30) defeated the Tampa Bay Rays (43-35) 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at Steinbrenner Field. With the win, the Rays were unable to complete a series sweep against the team with the top record in Major League Baseball.
Tied 1-1 after four, the Tigers took the lead for good with two runs in the seventh. During a ninth inning that was interrupted by an 18-minute rain delay, the Tigers put up six runs to turn the game into a blowout.
The Rays are now off on Monday before going to Kansas City for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday night. Taj Bradley (4-5, 4.95) is scheduled to start the series for the Rays on the mound.
