The Tampa Bay Rays (4-5) fell to the New York Yankees (4-5) -4 on Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field.
Brent Honeywell got the start in this game, making his major league debut. The last time Honeywell had pitched in a minor league game was September 19, 2017, before four elbow surgeries de-railed the past several season. In spite of the fact 1300 days had passed, Honeywell was effective, pitching two shutout innings while striking out two and walking none.
The Rays got a pair of runs in the second on a MIke Zunino home run, but the Yankees scored three runs in the top of the third to take the lead right back, including a two-run blast from Gio Urshela. In the bottom of the third, though, Randy Arozerena hit a two-run home run to give the Rays a 4-3 lead.
That lead would hold until the eighth inning, when Gleyber Torres tied the game with an RBI single. The score would remain tied 4-4 going into extra innings - in the tenth inning, the Yankees came through with a four-run outburst, thanks in large part to a clutch hit from Roughned Odor to break the tie. After falling behind 8-4, the Rays were unable to make anything happen in the bottom of the frame and New York was able to avoid being swept by Tampa Bay.
The Rays remain at Tropicana Field when they host the Texas Rangers in a four game series beginning Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 6 PM with Jay Recher and the Inside Pitch on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
