Rays Snap Losing Streak With Power Display

Nate Lowe homered twice, Yoshi Tsutsugo added a solo shot of his own, and Kevin Kiermaier and Austin Meadows each drove in a pair as the Tampa Bay Rays ended their three-game losing streak with a 11-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox Friday night at Tropicana Field.

Tampa Bay became the first team in modern Major League history to start a lineup with nine left-handed hitters and no switch-hitters against Andrew Triggs, but saw the right-hander leave after just one inning with a pinched nerve in his neck. Ron Roenicke went and brought in lefty Matt Hall, and Tsutsugo greeted him with a solo shot to center for a 1-0 lead.

Tampa Bay added a RBI groundout an inning later from Kevin Kiermaier an inning later, and doubled the lead again in the fourth with a two-run double by Meadows.

Lowe's first homer came in the sixth off Domingo Tapia, who was making his major league debut, and his second of the night, a three-run blast, came an inning later off Robinson Leyer after Tsutsugo singled home a run to make it 6-0.

The Rays added two more runs in the eighth, with Ji-Man Choi doubling in Joey Wendle, and Brandon Lowe scoring on another Kiermaier groundout.

Blake Snell (4-1) worked into the sixth, with Pete Fairbanks gettimg the final two outs of the frame. John Curtiss worked a scoreless seventh, and Ryan Sherriff followed suit in the eighth. Aaron Loup allowed back-to-back doubles to Jackie Bradley Jr. and Bobby Dalbec in the ninth to give Boston its only run.

The win, coupled with Toronto's 18-1 loss to the New York Mets, increases Tampa Bay's lead in the American League East to 4.5 games.

The Rays can officially eliminate the Red Sox from division contesntion with a win Saturday's third game of the series. Tyler Glasnow (2-1, 4.35 ERA) will get the start, taking on Nathan Eovaldi (2-2, 4.98 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:40, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 5:30 with The Inside Pitch.
