Rays Start Off Weekend Series By Shutting Out Yankees

ST. PETERSBURG (WDAE) -- Michael Perez's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning broke a scoreless tie and gave the Tampa Bay Rays a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees Friday at Tropicana Field.

The eighth inning started with Adam Ottavino walking Yoshi Tsutsugo, then allowing Kevin kiermaier aboard on a free pass two batters later. Perez was then summoned by manager Kevin Cash on his 28th birthday to pinch-hit for Mike Zunino, and after a wild pitch moved the runners up a base and Perez fouling a slider off his knee, the catcher lifted a fly ball to center field that was deep enough to bring in Tsutsugo for the only run of the game.

Rays starter Blake Snell threw 59 pitches in three innings of work, not allowing a hit and walking two while striking out five Yankees hitters. He was followed by two hitless innings by Andrew Kittredge. Pete Fairbanks allowed the first Yankees hit in the sixth, but worked through the inning unscathed.

New York had two chances late in the game to break through. In the seventh, Diego Castillo walked a pair, and Nick Anderson added another free pass to load the bases, but struck out Gary Sanchez to end the threat, and an inning later Mike Tauchman doubled off Chaz Roe, but when trying to advance to third base on a ground ball to short by DJ LeMahieu, he was thrown out on the basepaths.

Roe (2-0) then completed the top of the ninth to earn the win.

The Rays and Yankees will play a pair of seven-inning games Saturday at Tropicnaa Field. The matinee will feature a rematch of Game 5 of the ALCS as Tyler Glasnow (0-0, 3.12 ERA) will take on Gerrit Cole (3-0, 2.55 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 2:10, with coverage on WDAE beginning at 1:00 with The Inside Pitch. The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start about 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
