Tampa, FL - A new national study has recognized Tampa as one of the best places in the country for residents seeking a vacation experience without leaving their city.

WalletHub's 2026 Best Cities for Staycations report ranked Tampa eighth overall among more than 180 U.S. cities evaluated for recreation, entertainment, relaxation opportunities and affordability.

The annual study examined dozens of metrics to determine which locations offer residents the best options for enjoying leisure activities close to home.

Tampa was one of only two Florida cities to place inside the top 10.

Orlando earned the top overall ranking, while Tampa secured the No. 8 spot thanks to its variety of attractions, dining options, outdoor recreation and entertainment venues.

Researchers found the city performed particularly well in categories related to food, recreation and local activities.

The report analyzed 41 separate factors, including access to parks, swimming pools, golf courses, museums, festivals, restaurants and other attractions.

Cost related measures were also considered, including the affordability of entertainment and dining experiences available to local residents.

Tampa's ranking reflects the region's wide range of amenities, including waterfront destinations, professional sports teams, cultural attractions and year round outdoor activities.

The city also benefits from its proximity to beaches, nature preserves and other popular tourism destinations throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Nationally, Orlando, Cincinnati and Las Vegas claimed the top three positions in the rankings.

Tampa finished ahead of several larger metropolitan areas, including Chicago, New Orleans and San Diego.

The report arrives as many Americans continue looking for affordable travel alternatives.

Staycations have become increasingly popular as travelers seek to reduce transportation and lodging costs while still enjoying recreational activities and local attractions.
