Jacksonville, FL - Jacksonville police officers saved a 16-month-old child who was trapped inside a locked minivan that had rapidly heated on December 5th, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
The child's mother contacted 911 after realizing she had mistakenly locked her keys inside the vehicle while her toddler was still restrained in a car seat.
The engine was not running, the windows were closed and the mother reported that the child had been inside the minivan for about 25 minutes before officers arrived.
Body camera footage released by authorities showed the mother explaining the situation to officers as they assessed the vehicle.
Police determined that immediate action was necessary due to the temperature outside, which was around 85 degrees.
Investigators noted that even in December, interior vehicle temperatures can climb into dangerous ranges within minutes.
Officers broke a window to reach the child and removed the toddler from the vehicle.
According to police, the child showed signs of heat-related distress but recovered after receiving water and being cooled down at the scene.
Medical transport was not required.
The sheriff's office stated that the incident was accidental and that there was no indication of criminal behavior by the mother.
Since the situation involved no alleged criminal activity, no arrest report exists and no charges were filed.
Authorities advised the mother to continue calling 911 immediately in similar emergencies, emphasizing that rapid response is critical when a child is locked inside a vehicle.
