FLORIDA - Florida consumers are being advised to inspect their shredded cheese purchases following an expanded federal recall involving products that may contain metal fragments.

The Food and Drug Administration reclassified the recall of items produced by Great Lakes Cheese Co. as a Class II recall, a category used when a product defect could pose temporary or medically reversible health effects, though the likelihood of severe injury is considered low.

Great Lakes Cheese Co., an Ohio based manufacturer that supplies private label cheese for major retailers, distributed the affected products to Florida along with 30 other states and Puerto Rico.

The recalled items include several varieties of shredded and finely shredded cheese sold under well known supermarket brands.

Florida shoppers may have purchased these products at Walmart, Target, Aldi, Publix, H E B, Food Lion, Sprouts Farmers Market, and other grocery stores that carry brands such as Always Save, Borden, Brookshire's, Cache Valley Creamery, Chestnut Hill, Coburn Farms, Econo, Food Club, Freedom's Choice, Gold Rush Creamery, Good and Gather, Great Value, Happy Farms, Hill Country Fare, Know and Love, Laura Lynn, Lucerne Dairy Farms, Nu Farm, Schnuck's, Simply Go, Stater Bros Markets, and Sunnyside Farms.

The FDA advises Floridians who bought shredded cheese from these brands to confirm the product details and avoid consuming any packages included in the recall.

The agency recommends returning the items to the store for a full refund.

No injuries have been reported.

The notice follows another nationwide recall involving Pecorino Romano due to potential listeria contamination.
