Tampa, FL - Tampa Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened during an apparent roadway dispute in the Ybor City area Friday night.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire near East 5th Avenue and North 22nd Street shortly before 10 p.m.

When police arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries, according to officials.

Investigators said the suspected shooter remained at the scene, cooperated with detectives, and claimed the shooting occurred in self-defense.

Detectives are still working to determine what led to the confrontation but believe an argument between two men escalated before shots were fired.

Officers recovered the firearm involved and examined two unoccupied vehicles left in the roadway.

Parts of North 22nd Street and East 5th Avenue were closed for several hours as police processed the scene and collected evidence.

Witnesses reported hearing the gunshots and seeing a heavy police presence near the Columbia Restaurant shortly after the incident.

One visitor from out of state said he and his family were nearby when officers responded, describing the scene as chaotic.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the victim or the alleged shooter.

Tampa Police said the investigation remains active as they work to confirm the sequence of events and determine whether any charges will be filed.
