(Tallahassee, FL) - More than two dozen new state laws are now in effect as of October 1, 2025.
They include "Trooper's Law," which makes it a third-degree felony to abandon an animal during a natural disaster and is punishable by up to five years in prison. Trooper's Law kicks in just nine days before the one-year anniversary Trooper the bull terrier being found tied to an I-75 fence as Hurricane Milton approached.
You can now face additional criminal penalties if you try to get elude cops or use lights on your car to conduct traffic stops.
And after nearly 60 years, the state sales tax on commercial leases has ended.
Penalties have been upped for repeat DUI and BUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide offenders.
Plus, landlords must now disclose floods and flood risks.
Below are the ten new laws now in effect:
SB 150 — Abandoning restrained dogs during natural disasters
SB 168 — Mental health "Tristin Murphy Act."
HB 687 — Driving and boating offenses
HB 1121 — Unmanned aircraft and unmanned aircraft systems
HB 1351 — Registration of sexual predators and sexual offenders
