Deltona, FL - Two boys were arrested after they allegedly broke into Friendship Elementary School in Deltona, causing more than $50,000 in damage.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old allegedly forced entry on Saturday, shattering a glass door and vandalizing the media center.
Authorities say the suspects allegedly returned to the school later the same day, reportedly to inspect the damage and allegedly cause additional destruction.
The media center was left in disarray, with overturned tables and carts, scattered books and supplies, black paint on the walls, and vandalized bathrooms.
The sheriff’s office shared a photo of the two masked suspects on social media on Sunday.
By Monday, the boys had been identified after their mothers contacted authorities.
According to the sheriff’s office, both boys confessed to the alleged acts.
Following their alleged actions, the 12-year-old and 13-year-old were charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of trespassing on school grounds, criminal mischief, and theft.
Body camera footage released by deputies showed the media center as the alarm sounded, capturing the full extent of the damage and confirming the disorder caused by the suspects.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the incident and assess the total impact of the alleged vandalism.
Authorities are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the break-in and are taking steps to determine any additional legal actions required in connection with the incident.
