Palmetto Bay, FL - Palmetto Bay officials are demanding the resignation of Councilman Steve Cody after he allegedly posted a controversial comment about the recent killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Cody’s post, made Wednesday following the incident at a Utah university campus where Kirk was hosting a political event, read, “Charlie Kirk is a fitting sacrifice to our lords: Smith and Wesson. Hallowed be their names.”

The post drew immediate criticism from local, state, and federal officials.

At a gathering at Village Hall, leaders publicly called for Cody to step down.

Palmetto Bay Mayor Karyn Cunningham stated, “We are asking Councilmember Steve Cody to resign.”

Florida State Representative Omar Blanco also called for Cody to resign, while Vice Mayor Mark Merwitzer expressed support for the mayor’s position, highlighting the need for accountability.

Following the backlash, Cody issued an apology, acknowledging he “screwed up” and later posted a letter stating he had “regrettably made a significant error in judgment.”

Despite the apology, pressure continues as other public figures nationwide have faced consequences for posting comments about Kirk’s death.

Florida Representative Carlos Gimenez noted that while freedom of speech protects statements from legal consequences, employment consequences can still follow.

State Senator Alexis Calatayud emphasized that the actions surrounding Kirk’s death cannot be celebrated or condoned.

Palmetto Bay officials plan to add a formal agenda item for the council meeting on September 17th to request Cody’s resignation, signaling the local government’s intent to address the situation officially.
