Miami, FL - A neighborhood firework celebration ended in tragedy when a device allegedly detonated in a young man’s hand.

Witnesses told multiple local outlets that a group of friends had gathered outside homes near Northwest 50th Street late Friday to wrap up their Independence Day festivities with fireworks.

According to Miami Fire Rescue, the victim, identified only as a 23-year-old man, allegedly picked up a lit mortar that appeared to malfunction moments before it exploded, prompting panicked screams from onlookers.

Paramedics arrived quickly and rushed the injured man to Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center.

Surgeons reportedly amputated his index finger and treated third-degree burns across his palm.

These medical details were shared by several news stations after confirmation from hospital staff and relatives.

Additional reports noted that doctors are monitoring him for potential nerve damage that could affect long-term mobility.

Officials confirmed that no other individuals were hurt and nearby homes were not damaged.

Investigators with the Miami Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are now reviewing surveillance footage to determine whether the fireworks used were legally purchased and whether any criminal charges could be filed.

Safety experts continue to warn residents about the dangers of consumer fireworks, emphasizing that many can reach temperatures over one thousand degrees.

Local officials are urging families to attend professional displays or use safer alternatives like glow sticks for children.

Community leaders say the incident highlights the need for stronger awareness campaigns to help prevent similar tragedies during future celebrations.
