A student at a Fort Lauderdale high school has been diagnosed with an active case of tuberculosis.
Cleveland Clinic Weston's Infectious Diseases Department Vice Chair Dr. Patrick Kenney says Dillard High parents, students and staff have no reason to be overly concerned about casual contact with the student because, "exposure to anyone with tuberculous would be being in a confined space within six to ten feet of that person for more than eight hours at a time."
Those in close contact have apparently been notified, but it's recommended you get checked out by a doctor if you have a high fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss and a cough.
He adds, TB is not rare, "It's still very prevalent in the community, but it's not something that's readily contagious."
There are treatments for those who have TB and those who have been exposed to it.
