WAUCHULA -- A woman convicted in the hot car death of her baby granddaughter learns her sentence.
A jury rejected a manslaughter charge but found Tracey Nix guilty of leaving seven-month-old Uriel Schock in a car and causing bodily harm.
Nix apologized to her daughter, Uriel's mother, saying she tried to take her own life when she discovered the seven month old dead in the car in 2022. Uriel's brother, Nix's grandson Ezra, drowned while in her care in 2021 but she was not charged in that case.
But Judge Brandon Rafool said Nix was just trying to get out of a prison sentence and showed only sorrow, not remorse. He sentenced Nix to five years in prison, minus time served.
He also urged the community to leave the parents, Nix's daughter and son-in-law, Drew Schock and Kayla Nix, alone. "This community needs to move past this case... this family has lost two children... the tragedy is undeniable... this community needs to move forward. I am not putting people on probation to be walking around... to rehash an issue."
