Davie, FL - The Town of Davie has installed speed enforcement cameras in school zones to catch drivers exceeding the speed limit near local schools.
The cameras, now operational, capture license plates of speeding vehicles, initially issuing warnings before transitioning to fines on April 17th.
Davie follows other South Florida communities, such as Pinecrest and Hollywood, in implementing similar measures to improve safety.
Town officials aim to encourage safer driving habits and reduce accidents near schools.
Traffic congestion and speeding near Nova Southeastern University’s University School have been concerns for parents and staff.
University staff support the cameras, saying they will encourage drivers to obey speed limits.
The cameras are placed at two key locations: Southwest 30th Street near Nova Southeastern University, monitoring eastbound traffic, and Southwest 133rd Avenue, covering Flamingo Elementary and Western High School.
Local drivers have shared mixed reactions, with some supporting the initiative to protect students, while others feel it will take time for drivers to adjust.
For the next month, violators will receive warnings, but starting April 17th, those caught speeding will face a $100 fine.
The cameras will operate 30 minutes before and after school start and dismissal times.
More speed cameras are expected to be installed in additional school zones later this year.
