Winter Haven, FL - A bizarre arrest occurred in Winter Haven when a 23-year-old man high on methamphetamine broke into a family’s home and attempted to steal a carpet cleaner.
The suspect, identified as Austin Alexander Smith, is now facing multiple charges after the chaotic scene.
The break-in occurred around 1:30 a.m. on December 5, 2024, when the residents were startled awake by a loud banging noise at their front door.
Upon investigating, they found Smith, dressed only in a shirt and no pants, standing in their living room and holding the family’s carpet cleaner.
According to the Winter Haven Police Department, Smith was incoherent and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
When confronted by the homeowners, he dropped the carpet cleaner and fled the scene on foot.
Police were called to the area and quickly located Smith nearby.
Officers reported that he admitted to consuming methamphetamine earlier in the evening and claimed he had no memory of breaking into the house.
A search of the suspect did not reveal any weapons, but authorities noted his erratic behavior.
Smith was taken into custody and charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling. He is being held at the Polk County Jail.
The homeowners were not injured during the incident, and the carpet cleaner was returned without damage.
