Boynton Beach, FL - A family outing turned tragic on Sunday when a teenager drowned while swimming near Gulfstream Park in Boynton Beach.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, the teen was swept away by a strong current while swimming with his family early in the morning.
Officials say another child was rescued from the water before a Boynton Beach Fire Rescue captain and firefighter joined a Gulf Stream Police officer in rescuing the teen's mother, who had also been pulled into the dangerous current.
The mother was successfully brought to shore, but the fire captain sustained injuries during the rescue and was hospitalized.
He is expected to recover.
Despite search efforts, the teenager was found unconscious and pronounced dead at the scene around midday.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Violent Crimes Division has taken over the investigation.
