Two men who died after a plane crashed into a pond at a South Florida airport have been identified.

59-year old Stephen Taylor and 58-year old Gojko Damjanic were on a small Piper aircraft on Wednesday, practicing touch-and-go landings at the North County Airport when the plane skidded off the runway and into the water.

NTSB Investigator Daniel Boggs says the plane is being taken to an aircraft salvage facility.

"We're going to look at everything from the engine to the pilot qualifications, the airframe. We'll be looking a little bit closer at the weather, which I don't believe impacted it, but we'll look at the weather."

He says the two were flight instructor and pilot, but it's not known which one had which role.

They had flown from Pompano to Sarasota and Melbourne on Wednesday, before arriving in Palm Beach.

Boggs says the plane was built in 1979, which makes it "a young aircraft for airplane age."
