Authorities on the Treasure Coast are asking residents to sign up for their crime prevention camera registry.
Deputies caught a 52-year old home burglary suspect this week, thanks to several neighbors living in the Little Club community in Martin County sharing surveillance video from their doorbell cameras.
"In this particular case we would have never found the camera that gave us the best shot."
Sheriff William Snyder tells CBS 12 News that Ring this year changed their policy to no longer accept mass video requests from law enforcement. He says Dana Tuomi was in the middle of robbing a house when the homeowner walked through the door.
“This was a guy who was a career offender. He was on federal probation for bank robbery. He has a past criminal arrest for aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and resisting arrest. It's not the kind of guy going to come home and find in your house.”
Because of the video, deputies tracked down the man and recovered the victim's keys to her car.
Snyder says signing up for their program will let deputies know which homeowners use security cameras and would be willing to share the footage with the Sheriff's Office.
