Orange City, FL - A Volusia County man is facing child abuse charges following a shooting incident at his Orange City residence.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, 25-year-old Brad Markey-Perez accidentally shot his roommate in the jaw during what he described as a "vigilance drill" on March 20th.
The affidavit details that Markey-Perez believed the roommate's statement, "Bro, I could assassinate you right now in the blink of an eye," to be a real threat.
He then drew a handgun, which he claims accidentally discharged, striking the roommate.
The roommate sustained non-life-threatening injuries and reportedly did not wish to press charges.
However, authorities became involved due to the presence of two young children during the incident.
The children's mother stated she had previously expressed concerns about these "drills," which apparently involved roommates attempting to surprise each other, sometimes with unloaded or non-functioning firearms.
While Markey-Perez won't face charges directly related to the shooting, he was arrested on warrants for two counts of felony child abuse and one count of culpable negligence.
These charges stem from the recklessness of discharging a firearm in front of minors and the lack of proper gun safety measures, as evidenced by the weapon's unsecured trigger.
