Man Arrested for Disrupting South Florida Mosque Ceremony During Ramadan

Miami Gardens, FL - A 48-year-old man is facing charges after disrupting a worship ceremony at the Islamic Center of Greater Miami on Saturday.

Authorities say the incident occurred during Ramadan, the holy month for Muslims.

According to police, Raul Jose Betancourt, who has a history of trespassing on the mosque property, approached an off-duty officer working security and requested to retrieve belongings he claimed to have left behind.

After initially leaving the mosque, Betancourt returned and entered the mosque at a fast pace and began loudly shouting obscenities while attempting to interrupt the ongoing worship service.

Betancourt's arrest report states that he reportedly claimed to be a terrorist and on a watchlist.

While being apprehended by police, Betancourt became belligerent and repeatedly hit his head against the police car's partition.

Betancourt was arrested on a felony charge of disturbing a religious assembly with prejudice, a misdemeanor trespassing charge, and a municipal resisting arrest charge.

His past arrests in Miami-Dade County include convictions for drug possession, burglary, and assault on an elderly person.

Betancourt is currently being held in the Metro West Detention Center on a $2,150 bond.
