The City of Stuart has finalized its proposal to get a Brightline train station.

The city commission approved a plan to put one in the downtown area. Mayor Troy McDonald tells CBS 12 News that the location makes sense because the train already runs through the area on its way between Miami and Orlando.

“The train is coming through every day. We might as well get benefit from it. If the train does not stop, we get zero benefit.”

Brightline has committed to building a station somewhere on the Treasure Coast and the City of Fort Pierce is also working on a proposal.

McDonald believes his city has a "solid chance."

"The metrics that lead to higher ticket sales, which is what I’m sure Brightline is looking for, I think Stuart, Martin County meets those; will probably meet those metrics better than Fort Pierce.”

The cities have until December 22nd to submit their proposals to Brightline.

Martin County will discuss the issue at Tuesday's Commission meeting.
