Miami-Dade, FL - A man was arrested shortly after midnight on Wednesday following accusations that he assaulted his pregnant girlfriend using a combination of chemicals and physical violence.
Police say the assault occurred at an apartment on Northwest 97th Street in the West Little River neighborhood of northwest Miami-Dade around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday during an argument about infidelity.
According to authorities, 53-year-old Ira Toomer allegedly became "enraged" and armed himself with a can of bug spray during the dispute.
Toomer reportedly sprayed the bug spray in the woman's face, before grabbing a bottle of bleach and pouring it on the victim.
He then threatened the victim with a pocket knife, putting it to her neck and making death threats, before physically assaulting her by punching her in the face while restraining her.
The victim called the police, prompting Toomer to flee the scene.
An investigating officer noted visible bruising on the victim's face, along with an abrasion on the left side of her upper chest and upper back.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded, providing initial treatment and transporting the victim to a local emergency room for further evaluation.
Toomer was located by police and complained of difficulty breathing caused by inhaling the bleach he used to assault his girlfriend.
Medics administered treatment at the scene, but Toomer continued to complain, leading to his transportation to Jackson Memorial Hospital for further care.
Following a medical evaluation, Miami-Dade police transported Toomer to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remained in custody as of Wednesday evening.
He faces charges of aggravated battery on a pregnant victim with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
