LISTEN: Scammers Selling Driver's License Appointments in Tampa

TAMPA -- If you live in Hillsborough County and you've had a hard time getting an appointment at the driver's license office, it may be because of scammers.

Hillsborough Tax Collector Nancy Millan says people have been booking multiple times online, and selling them to Spanish-speaking residents. Her office received complaints about the lack of availabilities, as well as a tip or two. Her staff found multiple appointments for similar names, phones, and e-mails.

Millan actually "purchased" a driver's license appointment by calling a number and speaking in Spanish. She received a text message with several appointments in different locations, picked one, and was told to send $40 and was given a confirmation number.

The tax collector's office is making several changes to the process of booking an appointment online. Those include limiting bookings to one per person, requiring a driver's license number, limiting appointments to Hillsborough County residents, and in-person confirmation at the time of appointment.

The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office is investigating the operation and would like to hear from anyone who paid to get an appointment.
