Tampa Gets More Affordable Housing

TAMPA -- Ten affordable units are being added to the city of Tampa's housing stock.

A new development company founded by three Tampa natives plans to break ground on a complex on Columbus Drive near 22nd Street, just north of the Ybor City area.

Mayor Jane Castor says housing costs have risen 140 percent in the past decade.

Pittman Development Group's co-founders are Dontavious Pittman, Kevin Johnson and Ponce McNeal. All three went to Tampa Bay Technical High School and then to Florida A&M University. Pittman says he founded the business so Tampa natives could continue to live in Tampa.

Those eligible for the units must make no more than 80 percent of the area median income, $69.000 for a family of four.

The units are expected to open late next year.
