Florida's Out-of-State Tuition Hike on Hold After DeSantis Remarks

TAMPA -- A plan to raise tuition on out-of-state students in Florida's public universities is on hold for now.

The state Board of Governors was set to take up a potential 15 percent hike, at its Thursday meeting at the University of South Florida in Tampa. But vice chairman Eric Silagy says it needs "additional work."

The about-face comes after Governor DeSantis bragged about Florida's low tuition during an appearance at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. "“I think that the tuition increases we’ve seen around the country, huge increases, massive loans, massive debt, that is not the way to do it. So I’m proud in the state of Florida that we’re making this affordable for people."

The state of Florida's tuition rate for out-of-state students is 17 percent lower than the national average. It hasn't been raised in a decade.
