Stolen Rare Tortoise Rescued, Another Found Dead in Freezer in St Pete

ST. PETERSBURG -- Police have found two endangered Galapagos tortoises, taken from a St. Augustine zoo last November.

Unfortunately, one of them was found dead in a freezer.

Police arrested 46-year-old Joshua McCarty-Thomas and served a warrant at his home on 10th Street South. They say he took the tortoises from the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park last November 30. Each tortoise is worth about $10,000. He faces charges from St. Augustine Police on that case.

McCarty-Thomas is also accused of stealing rare books worth thousands of dollars from Haslam's Book Store on Central Avenue last December, and from Lighthouse Books on 1st Avenue North in 2019.

As if all that weren't enough, he's also accused of stealing comic books worth thousands of dollars in a burglary at a store in Ocala.
