Fort Myers, FL - Two baseball coaches at a Southwest Florida high school have been fired in recent months, including one who sent players an inappropriate text message containing a racial slur.
Fort Myers High School Assistant coach Alex Carcioppolo was removed from his position on February 16th for sending an inappropriate text message to members of the boys varsity baseball team.
A parent of one of the players provided NBC2 with a screenshot of the conversation, which contained a message that included a racial slur, with Carcioppolo writing "Happy Valentine's Day [racial slur]."
The district took immediate steps to dismiss Carcioppolo from his coaching position in response to the offensive text message.
In addition to Carcioppolo's dismissal, the head coach of the Fort Myers High School baseball team, Kyle Burchfield, was also removed from his position on April 5th.
The district has not confirmed the reasons behind Burchfield's removal from his coaching role.
As a result of the coaching changes, the head basketball coach has stepped in as the interim coach for the baseball team.
