Manatee County Ready to Pump Piney Point Wastewater Into the Ground

BRADENTON -- Two years after a big spill of tainted water, officials are ready to bury the whole issue, a half mile underground.

Manatee County officials say they've completed drilling of a 3300-foot injection well. It'll be used to pump the contaminated water from the abandoned Piney Point phospogypsum stacks, half a mile down into a saltwater aquifer, once it's been treated. The county expects to begin pumping in water a soon as next week.

The breach in a containment wall at Piney Point spilled more than 200 million gallons of wastewater into Tampa Bay in March of 2021, resulting in the evacuation of more than 300 homes and businesses.
