A busy stretch of roadway in Lake Worth Beach is closed for the next six months.
Palm Beach County officials say 6th Avenue South on the west side of I-95, between Grove Street and Congress Avenue shut down early Monday morning and will remain that way while crews work on a bridge replacement project.
East and west bound traffic is being detoured onto Congress, Lake Worth Road, Lake and Lucerne Avenues, as well as Dixie Highway.
Traffic to the east of I-95 is unaffected and the Sixth Avenue South ramps to and from I-95 remain open.
Trucks have no access to travel west of the Interstate unless making local deliveries.
On the county's north end, the bridge that connects Jupiter and Tequesta along U.S. One is closed on Monday for about 20 months.
The Florida Department of Transportation says the $122 million project will add an extra 17-feet of clearance, a navigable channel width of 125 feet and 7-foot bike lanes, along with concrete barriers to separate pedestrians from vehicles.
Residents in the area say the closure of the bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway and the Loxahatchee River will be a big inconvenience.
Drivers will have to go 15 to 20 minutes out of their way at times, along Alternate A1A and east or westbound along Indiantown Road.
