Lee County, FL - The Florida High School Athletic Association is facing criticism by parents and state lawmakers for questioning female students about their menstrual cycles.
According to NBC 2 News, the Florida High School Athletic Association has been asking female students about their menstrual cycles for years.
The state's physical evaluation form asks students “when was your first menstrual period? When was your most recent menstrual period? How much time do you usually have from the start of one period to the start of another?”
The form claims that the questions are optional, but many parents find them offensive and a privacy concern.
State Senator Lori Berman is joining others in calling to end the practice, which has been in place for decades.
Senator Berman believes that the matter is a privacy concern and wants to amend state laws to limit the information that is sent to the state.
“What is going to happen with that information? Who is going to have access to it? It’s really not anyone’s business,” Berman stated.
The matter was brought to the attention of the Florida High School Athletic Association last year, but the association was three votes shy of removing the questions from the form.
