Couple arrested for sex trafficking of 17-year-old across multiple cities

Miami-Dade, FL - A couple from Texas have been arrested after travelling to Miami-Dade with a 17-year-old girl to engage in prostitution.

According to Miami-Dade Police, 32-year-old Xavier Latrell Smith and 21-year-old Jayla Welch were arrested on multiple charges including human trafficking, interference with custody and unlawful use of a communication device after the duo traveled to Miami-Dade with the victim to engage in prostitution.

Police say Welch had been recruiting young girls for sex work in the Dallas area when she met the teenager.

Welch's boyfriend, identified as Smith, arranged meetings between customers and the girl for commercial sex.

An investigation into Smith and Welch began after police received a tip from the FBI about the trio's presence in an area known for sex trafficking in northwest Miami-Dade.

The group was found in a local motel and detained for questioning.

During their journey from Texas to Miami, the couple and the teenager stopped in several cities to meet clients who paid for sex that was arranged through online commercial sex sites.

The teen reportedly made as much as $10,000, which she split with Smith and Welch, during a one-week stay in Miami.

Smith and Welch were booked into jail.

Attorney information for both suspects is unavailable.
