Lawmakers Debate Insurance Reform Legislation

Lawmakers in Tallahassee continue working to fix Florida's property insurance crisis.

Rep. Tom Leek introducing H-B-1-A, which looks to stabilize the property insurance market and eliminate fraud, to the House Commerce Committee.

But Democrats argue the republican-backed legislation, gives no direct relief to consumers and a number of amendments they presented were voted down.

Rep Dotie Joseph argues that eliminating one-way attorney fees will leave property owners to pay a lawyer should their claim be denied.

Rep Hilary Cassel says the bill fails to give direct relief to property owners and will make it more difficult for consumers to go after an insurance company if their claim is denied.

Rep Tom Leek says litigation is one of the biggest drivers for premium increases.

The committee voting in favor of the bill which is expected to hit the House floor for a vote tomorrow. A similar bill is being debated in the state Senate.
