Hillsborough Commissioner Wants Courthouse Room Named for Andrew Warren

TAMPA -- At its last meeting before a Republican majority takes over, the Hillsborough Commission will debate whether to name a room at the courthouse for a state attorney suspended by Governor DeSantis.

A couple of weeks ago, Hillsborough County Commissioners turned down a proposal by State Attorney Susan Lopez to name a conference room at the courthouse in honor of Michael Sinacore, a former prosecutor who's now an assistant U.S. Attorney.

Commissioner Mariella Smith, a Democrat, said only an "elected" state attorney should make those requests. That's a reference to Andrew Warren the Hillsborough State Attorney suspended by Governor DeSantis.

The governor removed Warren from office August 4th, accusing him of "refusing to do his job" as a prosecutor.

The day after Smith lost her job in Florida's red wave, she filed an item to name an auditorium at the courthouse for Warren. Commissioners will discuss it at today's meeting, the last before Smith leaves office. The commission will hear that item in its November 16th meeting (Wednesday).

Republicans will form a majority on the commission when new commissioners are sworn in November 22nd.
