Cancer doesn't care whether you're a Democrat or Republican. That's the message from Nancy Brinker.

"I've always been involved politically one way or another just to support people who I think are good Americans and will be able to lead us. I'm much more interested in that than what party they're in."

In 2011, she was appointed to be a Goodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control by the World Health Organization and prior to that former President Obama awarded her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. But Brinker points out...

"I've been fortunate enough to serve every president since Ronald Reagan and actually even before that informally."

Brinker is known as the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, named for her sister who died from breast cancer. But she is now the co-founder of the Promise Fund of Florida, a Palm Beach County based nonprofit that aims to fill the gaps in access to cancer care.

"We have 80,000 to 100,000 women in Palm Beach County, the third largest county in the third largest state who have no primary healthcare."

Brinker is in the process of expanding the Promise Fund across the country.

Meanwhile, there are several events to benefit the organization going on locally during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, including Taste of the Square on Thursday. Sample food from participating restaurants at The Square, formerly City Place, from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

Here are some other ways to help:

Pink in the Rink with the Florida Panthers: The Florida Panthers will host a Pink in the Rink night on October 21 when they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at their 7:30 PM ice hockey game. In conjunction with the Promise Fund and Baptist Health, the fun evening will focus on raising awareness for breast cancer detection; honoring those currently battling or who have overcome the disease; and highlighting our medical community who work tirelessly to improve the lives of others.

Dine for a Cause” with Hilton West Palm Beach: Every Thursday from 4:00-10:00 PM for the month of October, the Promise Fund will receive a proceed from every bill at the Hilton’s Galley Restaurant.

Mammorama Screening Event in Pompano Beach: We are holding a screening day on November 1 from 8:00-10:00 AM in collaboration with Broward Community & Family Health and Simply Healthcare Foundation.
