SWFL woman hangs “Free Hugs” sign on lawn to comfort others following Ian

Fort Myers, FL - A Florida woman is offering free hugs to anyone needing them following Hurricane Ian decimating parts of the Gulf Coast.

Jessica Lindsay, a Fort Myers native, put a sign out front of her McGregor Boulevard home a few days after Hurricane Ian hit that reads "Free Hugs."

Lindsay says since the sign was hung, people have been taking her up on the offer, telling NBC 2 News "we had a whole group of electrical linemen come," adding that many others have approached her as well.

The devastation of Hurricane Ian hit close to home for Jessica, as her parents lost their home during last month's storm.

Like many in the area, her parents are planning to rebuild.

Jessica tells NBC 2 News "I think we’re getting to see what this town’s made of. It’s always been like this tourist town, but there’s a community here that has deep roots and is supportive of each other. You know we’re forever changed. But the hugs are a start."
