Florida colleges and universities suspend operations due to Hurricane Ian

Colleges and Universities across Florida are announcing plans for campuses and students as Hurricane Ian moves closer to the state.

BETHUNE-COOKMAN UNIVERSITY - DAYTONA BEACH

Bethune-Cookman University announced it would close its campus and evacuate on Monday starting at noon. No classes will be held Monday.

Classes will resume online Tuesday.

In a statement, school officials said ”students are reminded that their smartphones are ‘computers’ and that they should continue to use their cell phones to keep up with their studies in the event they do not have access to a tablet, laptop, desktop, etc."

LAKE-SUMTER STATE COLLEGE - CENTRAL FLORIDA

Lake-Sumter State College announced its campuses will remain open Monday and Tuesday, but students and staff will be made aware of plans for the remainder of the week by Tuesday at noon.

ROLLINGS COLLEGE - WINTER PARK

Rollins College announced on Monday that it would close its residential halls at 4 p.m. and the campus at 5 p.m. starting Wednesday.

The campus will remain closed Thursday and Friday.

School officials stated "classes are scheduled for today and tomorrow, but we know that students have begun traveling and have asked that faculty be flexible and accommodating regarding this week’s classes."

STETSON UNIVERSITY - CENTRAL FLORIDA

Stetson University announced the closing of its Gulfport and Tampa campuses on Tuesday. The closures are expected to last through Thursday.

Stetson’s DeLand campus is currently open, but administrators are meeting today to discuss potential actions.

UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA - ORANGE COUNTY

Officials at the University of Central Florida announced it will meet Monday to take a look at the hurricane's latest projections and will make decisions about university operations and events.

VALENCIA COLLEGE - ORLANDO

Valencia College announced all classes are being held as scheduled on its campuses. Students should follow social media to get the latest updates regarding closures due to the storm.
