Miami Beach FL - A South Florida city commissioner is making headlines after suggesting a bounty on iguanas to help deal with the invasive species.
Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber says this year's budget for iguana removal has increased by four times of last year's budget to deal with the problem plaguing South Florida.
City leaders met Wednesday and agreed to quadruple the budget for iguana remediation and looking into more solutions.
Mayor Gelber says the budget has been upped to $200,000.
Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez raised the idea of putting a bounty on the reptiles, telling WPLG "I don’t know - dead or alive. But if we pay per iguana we’re going to get more iguanas. People are going to go out and hunt them for money. I think that’s a better use of our money.”
Mayor Gelber says a bounty plan could work as long as it’s legal and does the job.
