WASHINGTON -- Amtrak is preparing for a nationwide rail strike by temporarily shutting down service to Florida.
The passenger rail service says it's shutting down long-distance trains ahead of the possible sstrike. That sidelines all of its Florida routes, including the Auto Train to the northeast that runs out of Sanford.
The Silver Star, Silver Meteor and the portion of the Palmetto south of Washington are also affected.
Amtrak workers aren't going on strike, but it depends on freight rail networks whose workers could walk out for the first time in 30 years.
The White House is working to avert a strike, that could start as soon as this weekend.
