Cape Coral, FL - Residents in a Southwest Florida town are concerned "Peeping Toms" are using drones to spy on them inside their homes.
Cape Coral resident Sam Harmon says he was visiting a friend's apartment off Skyline Blvd on Monday when someone flew a drone outside of the kitchen window in an attempt to film inside the apartment.
Harmon tells NBC 2 News he looked out of the apartment's kitchen window to see the drone, which he claims "could have been there for a while. As soon as I kind of made eye contact with it, it just flew away.”
Harmon says “I don’t know if it was a teenager or maybe an actual adult that has one. It could be somebody who’s scoping out a place to maybe rob.”
Chris Allen, the director of Florida Drone Supply, says if residents feels their privacy is invaded by a drone, they should contact their local law enforcement agency's non-emergency number.
Allen says some agency's, like the Lee and Collier County Sheriff's Offices, have access to "AeroScope" technology to investigate claims, telling NBC 2 News "I could go back and say, ‘okay, at 9:02 pm on August 28, a drone was here at Skyline Blvd. Can you tell me who that was?”
Allen says inappropriate uses of drones could warrant an FAA violation if the person or their drone isn’t properly licensed.
