Migrants on makeshift sailboat wash ashore at South Florida beach

Dania Beach, FL - Half a dozen migrants made landfall at a South Florida beach on Thursday in a makeshift sailboat.

Witnesses tell Local 10 News the migrants washed ashore just south of the Dania Beach Pier.

According to witnesses, U.S. Border patrol agents were searching for the migrants near Florida Atlantic University Sea Tech.

Personnel from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue also responded.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol described the incident as a “suspected maritime smuggling event.”

U.S. Department of Homeland Security say undocumented Cuban migrants are arriving in the United States in the highest numbers seen in four decades.
