Tampa Assistant Police Chief Ruben Delgado to Retire

The Tampa police department has confirmed that Ruben "Butch" Delgado, who was passed over for the chief's job earlier this year, will retire to take a job in the private sector.

A statement from the TPD did not indicate what position Delgado might be taking. "This is a great opportunity for me," he said. "I am so proud of the work the Tampa Police Department has accomplished, while serving and protecting the community over the years."

Delgado was a finalist for the chief's job, and many were upset that Mayor Jane Castor selected Mary O' Connor for the position. In his statement, Delgado called O' Connor a "great leader" who will "continue the proud legacy of this department."

Delgado leaves the police department after 24 years. His last day on the job will be July 1.
