LAKELAND -- Governor DeSantis has signed a bill that increases penalties for dealing in certain drugs in Florida.
The bill (HB 95) makes selling drugs near a treatment facility a first degree felony, and increases penalties for trafficking in given amounts of fentanyl.
It also makes it a first-degree murder case if a methamphetamine sale results in death.
The governor said 5300 Floridians died of fentanyl overdoses in 2020. He blamed the drug's presence in Florida in large measure on the Biden administration's border policies.
He signed the bill at a Lakeland fire station, along with Polk Sheriff Grady Judd and Seminole Sheriff Dennis Lemma.
