South Florida hotel evacuated after dead body, drug lab discovered

PLANTATION, FL - A South Florida hotel had to be evacuated after police discovered a man’s body and a makeshift drug lab inside one of the hotel’s rooms.

Police and fire rescue workers evacuated the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham on South Peters Road in Plantation on Saturday.

Officials received a 911 call about an unresponsive male inside a room just after 11:15 a.m.

First responders say the man was in his mid-30s and had died from a possible drug overdose hours before they arrived.

Around 3:25 p.m., officials received a call about someone cooking an illicit drug in the same second-floor hotel room that the body was found in a few hours earlier.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded and evacuated the hotel after discovering dangerous chemicals in the room.

Guests and staff waited outside of the hotel for several hours while Hazmat crews processed the scene.

The building was deemed safe and guests were allowed to return to their rooms late Saturday evening.

It’s unknown what chemicals were found inside the room, as investigators are attempting to determine what was being cooked.

Police are continuing to investigate.
